I held a Jewel in my fingers —
And went to sleep —

amethyst は、ギリシア語の amethustos（酔わせない）から派生。
Amethystを持つと、酔いを防ぐと信じられていた。

おそらくアメジストが2月の誕生石である事にも意味があるのだと思います。
私達はありもしないものをあると思い、掴めもしないものを、確実な人の肉体の一部である指で掴んでいると、絶対であると思います。
しかし、目覚めると何時も、指は真っ直ぐに伸び、掴んだものは手の平から消えています。
所有したという記憶だけが残り、それもやがて時の経過と共に失われ、所有したのか、しなかったのか、そうした「記憶」さえやがて朧（おぼろ）になります。

富を得ると、私達は満たされ、酔い痴れ、我を忘れます。
富では何も満たされない、所有など人にとって何の意味も持たない・・と或る日、ふと気付きます。
この詩はそういう意味です。

アメリカの独立を記念する月は、２月。
２月に幾つかの戦争が終結しています。
米英戦争の終結もその一つです。

On December 24,1814, the members of the British and American negotiating teams signed and affixed their individual seals to the document, which once ratified by their respective governments, ended the war of 1812.
The treaty released all prisoners and restored all war lands and boats, resulting in several changes.
