Clever Gretel(By the Grimm Brothers)9

There was once a cook named Gretel, who wore shoes with red heels, and when she walked out with them on, she turned herself this way and that, was quite happy and thought: ’You certainly are a pretty girl!’ And when she came home she drank, in her gladness of heart, a draught of wine, and as wine excites a desire to eat, she tasted the best of whatever she was cooking until she was satisfied, and said: ’The cook must know what the food is like.’
嘗て、グレ―テルという名の料理人がいました。彼女は、赤いヒ―ルの付いた靴を履いていました。そして、彼女がそれを履いて外出すると、彼女は、あっちでもこっちでも、自分で回転しました。
幸せそのもの、そして思いました。｢貴女は、確かに可愛い娘（こ）よ。」家に戻ると彼女は、何だか嬉しくて、ワインを一ロ飲みました。そしてワインが食欲を呼び覚ますにつれ、彼女は、満足するまで料理していたものなら何でも、最高のものをロにして、言いました。「料理人は、その素材は、どうすれば良いか知っていなければ。」

It came to pass that the master one day said to her: ’Gretel, there is a guest coming this evening; prepare me two fowls very daintily.’’I will see to it, master,’ answered Gretel. She killed two fowls, scalded them, plucked them, put them on the spit, and towards evening set them before the fire, that they might roast.The fowls began to turn brown, and were nearly ready, but the guest had not yet arrived.Then Gretel called out to her master: ’If the guest does not come, I must take the fowls away from the fire,
或る日マスタ―は、彼女に言いました。「グレ―テル、御客様が、今晩いらっしゃる予定だ。二羽の鶏をこの上なく選りすぐって、僕に用意して。」「私は、それを取り計いましょう。マスタ―。」グレ―テルは、答えました。彼女は、二羽の鶏を殺し、それを計って、その毛を毟り、それを串に刺しました。そして、夜会に向け、それが焼けるよう、暖炉の前に用意しました。鶏は、こんがりと焼け始め、殆ど準備しましたが、お客様は、未だ着きません。そこで、グレ―テルは、彼女のマスタ一を呼び出しました。もしお客様がいらっしゃらなければ、私は、炉火から下ろして、鶏を食べなければなりません。
