There was once a man whose wife died and left him to bring up their only child，a little daughter，who was sweet and gentle by nature and as pretty as a girl could be．
Father and daughter lived happily enough together until the man married again．
His new wife was a proud and masterful woman，with two plain daughters who were as arrogant and disagreeable as she was herself．
These three soon took command in the house and，because they were jealous of the young girl’s charm and beauty，they always spoke unkindly to her and made her work from morning till night．
She had no pretty dresses，only the cast-off clothes of the older girls；she had to sweep and dust
and scrub；to lay the fire；to cook，and wash the dishes．
When her work was done the poor child had nowhere to go but the kitchen，where she sat in the chimney corner among the cinders and ashes；and for this reason she was called Cinderella．
Now it happened that the prince of that country was unmarried ．
The king，his father decided to give a great ball to which all persons of consequence were to be invited．
The ball would be held for three nights and the king felt sure that his son would be able to find a bride among the beautiful ladies who would attend．
An invitation was received by Cinderella's sisters，who were highly delighted．
They spent hours discussing what they should wear，and even consulted Cinderella，for she had excellent taste．
Cinderella had to wash and iron and sew for them，and when the great day came she was summoned to help them dress．
She did up hooks and eyes，tied ribbons and laces，arranged their hair，and handed them the glittering jewels and ornaments with which they decked ―for they are determined to impress the prince with all their finery．
After everyone had gone to the palace and she was left alone poor Cinderella sat down in the chimney-corner and wept bitterly．
She would so dearly have liked to have gone to the ball．
Suddenly there appeared beside her a little old woman，who smiled at her and asked，‘Cinderella，why are you crying？’
‘Oh’said Cinderella ‘my sisters have gone to a magnificent ball at the palace，and I wish，oh！how I wish they had taken me too!’
‘Dry your eyes，’said the little old lady．‘I am your fairy godmother，and if you promise to do exactly as I tell you，you shall go to the ball．’
So Cinderella dried her eyes，and when her godmother told her fetch a pumpkin，she did so without question．
With one touch of her wand the fairy turned the pumpkin into a splendid golden coach．
Then she said to Cinderella，‘Go and fetch the mouse-trap．

‘There you are，said the godmother，‘now you can go to the ball!’

‘That is soon put right，’answered her god mother．

‘How late you are，’she said as she opened the door to them，yawning and rubbing her eyes，as though she had just awakened from sleep．
‘If you had been at the ball you would not have been home any earlier，’one of them answered． ‘A beautiful princess was there and no one left before she did．
‘She was vastly agreeable to us，’added the other．
‘The prince himself was much taken with her；he had eyes for no one else．’
The two sisters were full of admiration for the strange princess who had so outshone every other beauty at the ball．

Cinderella went also，and looked even more lovely than she had done the night before．

The prince，they said，was very much in love with her，and had said he would give all he possessed to find out who she was．
The third night Cinderella‘s dress was cloth of gold and silver；it was trimmed with diamonds，and she wore a diamond circlet in her hair．
Everyone at the palace waited for the arrival of the unknown beauty；the ball did not start until she came．

The hours sped by and she was dancing with the prince when the clock began to strike．
Surely it was only eleven？

She arrived panting out of breath with nothing left of her magnificence except one little glass slipper．
What a to-do there was at the palace！

None of the guards whom he questioned had seen the beautiful princess；one of them had caught sight of a little ragged girl running through the palace grounds，but of the princess there was not a sign．

仕事が終わると、可愛そうな子供は、台所の他に何処にも行く所がありません。
彼女は、熾きと灰に囲まれた炉辺（ろばた）で蹲（うずくま）っていました。
この所為で、彼女はシンデレラと呼ばれました。
時に、その国の皇太子は、たまたま独身でした。
君主である彼の父は、あらゆる有力者が招待される盛大な舞踏会を開く事にしました。
舞踏会は三晩催され、息子は、出席する美しい淑女の中に、間違いなく花嫁を見付ける事が出来るだろう、と君主は思いました。
招待状は、シンデレラの姉達によって受け取られました。
彼女達は、大変喜びました。
二人は、何を着ようか相談して時を費やし、シンデレラにまで意見を聞きました。
彼女は、上品な好みでしたから。
シンデレラは、彼女達の代わりに、洗濯をして、アイロンを掛け、縫い物をしなければなりませんでした。
やがて、その大切な日が遣って来ると、身支度を手伝うよう彼女達に言い付けられました。
彼女は、ホックと止金を留め、リボンやレースを結び、彼女達の髪を整え、美しく見せる、人目を引く宝石や装身具を、彼女達に手渡しました。―彼女達は、麗々しく着飾って、皇太子を感銘させようと、心密かに決めていましたから。
みんな宮殿に出かけ、１人切りで放って置かれると、可愛そうなシンデレラは、炉辺（ろばた）に腰を下ろし、ひどく嘆き悲しみました。
彼女は、本当に心から舞踏会に行きたくなりました。
突然、彼女の傍（そば）に、小さな年老いた婦人が現れました。そして彼女に微笑み、尋ねました。
「シンデレラ、どうしてあなたは泣いているの？」
「あぁ」シンデレラは、口を開き、「私のお姉さまは、宮殿の素敵な舞踏会に出かけた、それなのに私は、あぁ！私も連れて行ってくれたら、とどんなに願った事でしょう！」
「泣かないで」、小さな年取った女の人は、言いました。
「私はあなたの妖精の代母です。もし、私があなたに話すままを寸分違わず行うと約束するなら、舞踏会に行かせてあげましょう」
そこで、シンデレラは、涙を拭いました。それから妖精の代母は、南瓜（かぼちゃ）を取って来るように、彼女に告げました。彼女は、疑いもせずそうしました。
彼女の魔法の杖がちょっと触れただけで、妖精は、その南瓜を、金色（こんじき）に輝く、見事な四輪大型馬車に変えました。
それから彼女は言いました。
「行って鼠捕りを取って来て」
六匹の二十日鼠と一匹の溝鼠（どぶねずみ）が、罠の中にいました。
妖精の代母は、直ぐにその二十日鼠を六頭の見事な馬に、溝鼠を御者に変えました。
彼女の為にシンデレラが庭で見つけた六匹の蜥蜴（とかげ）は、立派な装いに身を包んだ六人の従僕になりました。
「これでいいわ」と、代母は言いました。「さあ、あなたは舞踏会に行くといい」「でも、私は何を着ればいいの？」シンデレラは、尋ねました。「私は、こんな古くなったぼろ服を着て行けない、それに、私は、他にドレスを持っていないの」
「それは、直ぐに揃えられます」と、彼女の代母は言いました。
彼女は、魔法の杖でシンデレラに触れました。するとたちまち、彼女の着古した服が消え、シンデレラは、高価な宝石が散りばめられたちらちら光る絹のガウンを着てみると、申し分（ぶん）がありませんでした。

「一人の美しい皇女（おうじょ）がそこにいらっしゃって、彼その方が会場を後になさるまで、誰一人去ろうとはしなかった。」
「その方は、とても私達に好意的だったの。」もう一人が付け加えました。
「皇太子ご自身、ひどくその方に惹かれていらっしゃって、他の何方（どなた）にも目を呉れようともなさらなかった。」
二人の姉は、舞踏会の、他の全ての美しい方々にも勝る、その見知らぬ皇女に対する感嘆の念でいっぱいでした。
翌日の夕方、二人の姉は、再び宮殿に出掛けました。
シンデレラも同じ様に、出掛けましたが、昨夜より更に一層、綺麗で愛らしく見えました。
国王の子息は、ただひたすら彼女の側にいました。

彼女達が言うには、その王子は、すっかり彼女に恋してしまった挙句、彼女が誰なのか捜し出してくれたら、全財産を与えてもよい、と言ったそうです。
三日目の夜、シンデレラのドレスは、金糸、銀糸が織り込まれた布でした。 それは、ダイアモンドで飾られていました。そして、髪に、ダイアモンドのティアラを付けました。
宮殿の誰もが、筆舌に尽くし難い美しい人の登場を待ち望んでいました。
舞踏会は、彼女が到着するまで始まりませんでした。
この度（たび）ばかりは、皇太子は、他の誰とも踊らず、一晩中、シンデレラの傍にいました。
幸せ過ぎて、シンデレラは、全く注意を払う事もなくなりました。
時間が走り去り、柱時計が打ち始めた頃には、彼女は、皇太子と踊っていました。
まさか、未だ１１時では？
しかし、その打音は、低く響きました、十一、十二！

ぞっとして、シンデレラは、皇太子の手からその手を捻り取りました。
彼女は、戸口を抜けて飛び出しました。そして、長い階段を走り下りる時、小さなガラスの上靴の片方を失くしましたが、余りにも急いでいましたから、立ち止まって、それを拾い上げる間がありませんでした。

彼らの内の一人は、宮殿の庭を走り抜ける、小さなぼろを着た女の子の姿をちらっと見ましたが、その皇女だという証拠はありません。
皇太子は、諦めました。
その時、廷臣の一人が、長い階段で見付けた、小さなガラスの上靴を、彼の所に持って来ました。
皇太子は、その上靴を履いていた淑女を妻とする、身分が高くとも低くとも、真実の持ち主が見付けられるまでそれを履いてみるチャンスが、誰にでも一度はある、と告知するよう、国王を説得し、そして国中に使いを送りました。
その上靴は、初めに皇女に、次に公爵夫人達に、その次に王宮の全ての者達に運ばれました。
しかし、悉（ことごと）く無駄でした。
最後に、それは、二人の姉の住まいに持って行かれました。
それにぴったり合わせようと、彼女達は出来る限りの事をし尽くしました。
けれども、どうする事も出来ませんでした。
彼女達を見守りながら、あの上靴だと思ったシンデレラは、「そうですね、私に合うかどうか確かめてみましょう！」と口にしました。
姉達は、笑い、彼女を嘲（あざけ）り始めました。
ところが、上靴を履かせようとしていた王宮の侍従は、何て愛らしい人なんだ、と思いました。そこで、無論です、彼女にも是非履いて頂きたい。国中の娘にそれを履いてみるよう、命令を下したのですから、と言いました。
シンデレラは、腰を下ろし、彼女の小さな足に、その上靴を滑り込ませました。それは、あたかも彼女の為に作られたかのように、彼女にぴったりだと云う事が明らかになりました。
二人の姉は、驚きました。
それだけでなく、履いていた片方の小さな上靴を、シンデレラがポケットから出すと、尚更驚きました。

昔、妻が他界し、二人の唯一の子供、いといけな娘を育てなければならなくなった一人の男がいました。
その娘は、生まれつき可愛らしくて、大人しくて、少女としてあり得る限り、可憐でした。
父と娘は、その男が再婚するまで、一緒に、充分幸福に暮らしました。
彼の新しい妻は、彼女によく似た、傲慢で、気難しい二人の不器量な娘を連れた、思い上がった、我儘な女でした。
この三人は、直（じき）に家の中の支配権を握りました、と云うのも、彼女達は初心（うぶ）な少女の魅力や美点を妬（ねた）んでいましたから。彼女達は、彼女に対して、絶えず不親切にものを言い、朝から夜まで彼女の仕事を用意しました。
彼女は、小奇麗な服を一枚も持たず、只、姉達の着古した服ばかり持っていました。彼女は、掃いて、はたきを掛け、ごしごし洗わなければなりません。薪（たきぎ）をくべては、煮炊きをし、それからお皿を洗いました。
仕事が終わると、可愛そうな子供は、台所の他に何処にも行く所がありません。
彼女は、熾きと灰に囲まれた炉辺（ろばた）で蹲（うずくま）っていました。
この所為で、彼女はシンデレラと呼ばれました。
時に、その国の皇太子は、たまたま独身でした。
君主である彼の父は、あらゆる有力者が招待される盛大な舞踏会を開く事にしました。
舞踏会は三晩催され、息子は、出席する美しい淑女の中に、間違いなく花嫁を見付ける事が出来るだろう、と君主は思いました。
招待状は、シンデレラの姉達によって受け取られました。
彼女達は、大変喜びました。
二人は、何を着ようか相談して時を費やし、シンデレラにまで意見を聞きました。
彼女は、上品な好みでしたから。
シンデレラは、彼女達の代わりに、洗濯をして、アイロンを掛け、縫い物をしなければなりませんでした。
やがて、その大切な日が遣って来ると、身支度を手伝うよう彼女達に言い付けられました。
彼女は、ホックと止金を留め、リボンやレースを結び、彼女達の髪を整え、美しく見せる、人目を引く宝石や装身具を、彼女達に手渡しました。―彼女達は、麗々しく着飾って、皇太子を感銘させようと、心密かに決めていましたから。
みんな宮殿に出かけ、１人切りで放って置かれると、可愛そうなシンデレラは、炉辺（ろばた）に腰を下ろし、ひどく嘆き悲しみました。
彼女は、本当に心から舞踏会に行きたくなりました。
突然、彼女の傍（そば）に、小さな年老いた婦人が現れました。そして彼女に微笑み、尋ねました。
「シンデレラ、どうしてあなたは泣いているの？」
「あぁ」シンデレラは、口を開き、「私のお姉さまは、宮殿の素敵な舞踏会に出かけた、それなのに私は、あぁ！私も連れて行ってくれたら、とどんなに願った事でしょう！」
「泣かないで」、小さな年取った女の人は、言いました。
「私はあなたの妖精の代母です。もし、私があなたに話すままを寸分違わず行うと約束するなら、舞踏会に行かせてあげましょう」
そこで、シンデレラは、涙を拭いました。それから妖精の代母は、南瓜（かぼちゃ）を取って来るように、彼女に告げました。彼女は、疑いもせずそうしました。
彼女の魔法の杖がちょっと触れただけで、妖精は、その南瓜を、金色（こんじき）に輝く、見事な四輪大型馬車に変えました。
それから彼女は言いました。
「行って鼠捕りを取って来て」
六匹の二十日鼠と一匹の溝鼠（どぶねずみ）が、罠の中にいました。
妖精の代母は、直ぐにその二十日鼠を六頭の見事な馬に、溝鼠を御者に変えました。
彼女の為にシンデレラが庭で見つけた六匹の蜥蜴（とかげ）は、立派な装いに身を包んだ六人の従僕になりました。
「これでいいわ」と、代母は言いました。「さあ、あなたは舞踏会に行くといい」「でも、私は何を着ればいいの？」シンデレラは、尋ねました。「私は、こんな古くなったぼろ服を着て行けない、それに、私は、他にドレスを持っていないの」
「それは、直ぐに揃えられます」と、彼女の代母は言いました。
彼女は、魔法の杖でシンデレラに触れました。するとたちまち、彼女の着古した服が消え、シンデレラは、高価な宝石が散りばめられたちらちら光る絹のガウンを着てみると、申し分（ぶん）がありませんでした。
そこで、代母は、彼女に一足のガラスの上靴を差し出しました。
今まで見た中で最も美しい上靴でした。
それから、シンデレラは、金色（こんじき）の大型四輪馬車に乗り込みましたが、舞踏会に駆り出す前に、彼女の代母は、彼女に厳重な警告を発しました。
あなたは、十二時前に必ず引き払わなければなりません。
もしあなたが、真夜中を一分でも回って居残れば、何もかもそれまでと同じになります。
あなたの大型四輪馬車は南瓜に、馬や随行者は、二十日鼠と蜥蜴に戻り、あなたは、元のように、着古したぼろ服を着る事になります。
シンデレラは、約束しました。
彼女は、妖精の代母に感謝し、大喜びで宮殿に駆り出しました。
彼女が到着すると、皇太子自身によって出迎えられました。 そして彼の腕を取って舞踏会場に入りました。
誰もが踊るのを止め、音楽家まで演奏する手を休め、この来たばかりの人の優しさと美しさにどれだけ魅了された事か。彼らは、彼女が何処かの国の王妃だと考えました。
皇太子は、彼女と幾度も踊り、一晩中彼女から目を離す事はありませんでした。
晩餐の間、シンデレラは、労を厭わず、二人の姉に優しくしようとしました。
何故なら見事に装っていましたが、彼女達は相変わらず不器量で、恥ずかしがり屋でしたから。
殆どの人が一緒に踊って下さい、と言いませんでした。
１１時半を過ぎると間もなく、彼女の代母との約束を思い出しました。
シンデレラは、国王、女王、そして皇太子に礼儀正しくお辞儀をして、人目に付かないように分かれを告げました。
彼女は、無事家に帰り、彼女の姉達が帰って来るまで、台所の側の何時もの場所で、しばらくじっとしていました。
「随分遅かったのね。」
彼女は、ドアを開けると、まるで、今、眠りから目覚めたように、欠伸（あくび）をして、目を擦（こす）りながら言いました。
「もし、あなたが舞踏会にいたら、少しでも早く、家に帰ろうなんて、あなたはきっと、思わなかったでしょう。」彼女達の内の一人が、言い返しました。
「一人の美しい皇女（おうじょ）がそこにいらっしゃって、彼その方が会場を後になさるまで、誰一人去ろうとはしなかった。」
「その方は、とても私達に好意的だったの。」もう一人が付け加えました。
「皇太子ご自身、ひどくその方に惹かれていらっしゃって、他の何方（どなた）にも目を呉れようともなさらなかった。」
二人の姉は、舞踏会の、他の全ての美しい方々にも勝る、その見知らぬ皇女に対する感嘆の念でいっぱいでした。
翌日の夕方、二人の姉は、再び宮殿に出掛けました。
シンデレラも同じ様に、出掛けましたが、昨夜より更に一層、綺麗で愛らしく見えました。
国王の子息は、ただひたすら彼女の側にいました。
そして彼女は、余りにも心底楽しく過ごしましたので、代母の警告を、殆ど忘れてしまうところでした。
彼女が舞踏会場を後にする頃にはもう、零時ほんの少し前になっていましたから、その派手な装いが消える前に、かろうじて、彼女は、家に帰り着く事が出来ました。
戻るなり、彼女の姉達は、誰一人その名も知らぬ、異国の皇女について、大いに語りました。
彼女達が言うには、その王子は、すっかり彼女に恋してしまった挙句、彼女が誰なのか捜し出してくれたら、全財産を与えてもよい、と言ったそうです。
三日目の夜、シンデレラのドレスは、金糸、銀糸が織り込まれた布でした。 それは、ダイアモンドで飾られていました。そして、髪に、ダイアモンドのティアラを付けました。
宮殿の誰もが、筆舌に尽くし難い美しい人の登場を待ち望んでいました。
舞踏会は、彼女が到着するまで始まりませんでした。
この度（たび）ばかりは、皇太子は、他の誰とも踊らず、一晩中、シンデレラの傍にいました。
幸せ過ぎて、シンデレラは、全く注意を払う事もなくなりました。
時間が走り去り、柱時計が打ち始めた頃には、彼女は、皇太子と踊っていました。
まさか、未だ１１時では？
しかし、その打音は、低く響きました、十一、十二！
十二時！
ぞっとして、シンデレラは、皇太子の手からその手を捻り取りました。
彼女は、戸口を抜けて飛び出しました。そして、長い階段を走り下りる時、小さなガラスの上靴の片方を失くしましたが、余りにも急いでいましたから、立ち止まって、それを拾い上げる間がありませんでした。
彼女が一番下の段に達するまでに、彼女の綺麗な服は、ぼろ服に変わり、ドァに着く頃には、大型四輪馬車も御者も従僕も、悉（ことごと）く消えていました。
シンデレラは、家に着くまで走り通さなければなりませんでした。
小さなガラスの上靴の片方の他に、贅沢なものの一つも残せず、彼女は、息を切らして帰り着きました。
宮殿では、どんなに大騒ぎだった事でしょう！
彼女は、彼の手を逃れて突然飛び出しましたので、皇太子は、後を追おうとしました。
しかし、彼は、直に、人込みの中に、シンデレラを見失いました。
結局、何処へ彼女が去ったのか、分からなくなりました。
尋ねた警備隊の誰も、その美しい皇女に気付かなかったのです。
彼らの内の一人は、宮殿の庭を走り抜ける、小さなぼろを着た女の子の姿をちらっと見ましたが、その皇女だという証拠はありません。
皇太子は、諦めました。
その時、廷臣の一人が、長い階段で見付けた、小さなガラスの上靴を、彼の所に持って来ました。
皇太子は、その上靴を履いていた淑女を妻とする、身分が高くとも低くとも、真実の持ち主が見付けられるまでそれを履いてみるチャンスが、誰にでも一度はある、と告知するよう、国王を説得し、そして国中に使いを送りました。
その上靴は、初めに皇女に、次に公爵夫人達に、その次に王宮の全ての者達に運ばれました。
しかし、悉（ことごと）く無駄でした。
最後に、それは、二人の姉の住まいに持って行かれました。
それにぴったり合わせようと、彼女達は出来る限りの事をし尽くしました。
けれども、どうする事も出来ませんでした。
彼女達を見守りながら、あの上靴だと思ったシンデレラは、「そうですね、私に合うかどうか確かめてみましょう！」と口にしました。
姉達は、笑い、彼女を嘲（あざけ）り始めました。
ところが、上靴を履かせようとしていた王宮の侍従は、何て愛らしい人なんだ、と思いました。そこで、無論です、彼女にも是非履いて頂きたい。国中の娘にそれを履いてみるよう、命令を下したのですから、と言いました。
シンデレラは、腰を下ろし、彼女の小さな足に、その上靴を滑り込ませました。それは、あたかも彼女の為に作られたかのように、彼女にぴったりだと云う事が明らかになりました。
二人の姉は、驚きました。
それだけでなく、履いていた片方の小さな上靴を、シンデレラがポケットから出すと、尚更驚きました。
