THE LITTLE LADY’S ROSES71

「アナと雪の女王」の主題歌「let it go」を歌う「May J」と語学、音楽、コンピューター学校経営の両親、翻訳家「高橋知伽江」、劇団四季は、金品泥棒、翻訳泥棒、歌泥棒、不正アクセス、家屋侵入の為、米子市に住民税、水道代、電気代も払わず十年居住。
May Jは、メーデーで、共産主義者の意味。

Down in the valley was the village，where Jhon and Mary lived with their Mother and Father in a little cottage and went to school when the bell rang in the schoolhouse on weekdays；and to church when the bells rang in the little church on Sundays.　
 谷に下りると、村がありました。そこに、ジョンとメアリーが、お母さんやお父さんと、小さな家で暮らしていました。そして平日には、鐘が鳴ると、粗末な校舎に通いました。日曜日には、小さな教会で鐘が鳴ると、教会に出かけました。

And up on the hill was the great mansion，where the Little Lady lived all by hershelf with her servants，and paced up and down the long flight of stone steps between the cypresses and orange-trees，or walked in her rose-garden，wich was loveliest in her world.
又、丘に上ると、素晴らしいマンションがありました。そこには、年端がいかない令嬢が、使用人をつかって、全く一人で日々を過ごしていました。それは、糸杉とオレンジの木の間の石段の長い階段を上り下りしたところにありました。又、彼女の身の回りの中で最も慈しんだバラ園の中を散歩しました。

The hill was high and the valley was deep，so people seldom went up or came down;only a silvery river flowed between the high mansion and the low cottages，and seemed to bind them together. 　
 丘は、高いところにあり、谷は、深いところにありました。ですから、人々は、めったに上ろうとも下ろうともしません。只、銀色に光る川が、高い所にある邸宅と粗末な住宅の間を流れ、一つに合わさってそれを束ねているようでした。

When they were out of school，Mary helped her Mother in the kitchen，and she was ten could　bake little pies fit for a queen. And John dug in the garden with his Father，and befoe he was twelve could raise cabbages fit for a king.In their free time the children played in the fields with their school－fellows，or paddled in the shallow pools of the river as it flowed down the mddle of the valley.　　　 　学校を終えると、メァリ一は、台所で彼女のお毋さんの手伝いをしました。そして彼女が十歳になる前には、直ぐにでも妻になれそうな、ささやかなパイが焼けるようになりました。又、ジョンは、彼のお父さんと一緒に、庭でこつこつ働きました。そうして彼が12歳になる前には、大立者に似つかわしく、キャべツを裁培する事が出来るようになりました。暇な時には、子供達は、自分の同級生と運動場で遊びました。そうでなければ川の　浅瀬で、水遊びをしました。それは谷の中程を流れ卞っていたのですが。

One hot June day as they were splashing in the shallows they saw in the distance two tiny specks
floating towards them.　
“Here comes the boats!”cried John.
“With red and white sails，”said Mary.
“I’ll have the red one，”said Jhon;and Mary said，“I’ll have the white.”
或る暑い六月の日中、彼らが浅瀬で水をパチャパチャさせていると、二人の方に向かって浮かぶ二つの小さな欠片を見つけました。
こっちにボートが近付いている！」ジョンは、叫びました。
赤と白の帆をかけた。」とメアリ一が、言いました。
「僕は、赤いのがいいな。」ジョンは、言いました。そしてメアリ一が、言いました。「私は、白いのがいい。」

But as the tyny craft came nearer，the children saw they were not boats，but roses.
ところが、小っちゃいクラフトがもっと近づくと、子供達は、それはボ―卜ではなく、バラだと思いました。

They had never seen such roses for colour，size，and perfume.　Jhon captured the red rose，and Mary the white one，and home they ran with their prizes.　
彼らは 、こんな色、大きさ、香りのバラを一度も見た事がありません。ジョンは、赤いバラを取りました。そしてメアリ一は、白いのを。それから自分の褒美を持って、急いで家に帰りました。

When their parents saw the roses，the Father said,“By my Shovel and Hoe! If I could grow roses like that in my garden I'd be a proud man!"And the mother cried，“Dear bless my Cherry Tart!If I could have roses like them in the home I’d be a glad woman!”　　
彼らの両親は、そのバラを見ました。と同時に、お父さんが、言いました。僕のショヴェルと鍬（くわ）で！もし僕がうちの庭で、そんなバラを育てられたら、さぞかしあっぱれな男だろう！」そしてお母さんは、大声で言いました。「私のチェリ一タルトに心から感謝!もし私が、家でそれに似たバラを食べられたら、さぞかし喜ばしい女になれるでしょうに!」

Then the Father asked，“Where did you get‘em，children?”
そこで、お父さんは聞きました。「子供達、何処でそれを手に入れたの?」

“They came down the river from the top of the hill，”said John.
それは、丘の頂上から川へ下っていた。ジョンは、言いました。

“Ah!” sighed the Father. “Then they came from the Little Lady’s rose-garden，and are not for the likes of us.”
「ああ！」お父さんは、溜息を吐きました。「その時それは、年端がいかない令嬢のバラ園から来た。つまり僕達のようなものの為にあるんじゃないんだね。」

And he went out to hoe cabbages,while the
 Mother rolled her paste.
それからお母さんが、練り粉を麺棒で伸ばしている間、お父さんは、キャベツを鍬で掘り起こしに出かけました。

But Jhon and Mary stole out of the cottage，and Jhon said to Mary，Let us find the Little Lady’s rose-garden，
ところで、ジョンとメアリ一は、田舎家をこっそり抜け出しました。そしてジョンは、メアリ一に言いました。年端がいかない令嬢のバラ園を探そう。

“How shall we find it?”said May.
“We’ll take the road up the hill that the roses took down.”
“What road is that?”said Mary.　
“The river”，said John.
So they followed the river uphill till they came near the top，and were stopped by a big iron gate，that led longest flight of steps they’d ever seen.
On the steps the Little Lady herself paced slowly up，and when she reached the fotain at the top she turned，and paced slowly down again.　At the bottom of the steps she saw　the little faces of John and Mary pressed against the bars.
“what are you doing？”said John.
“Counting the steps，”said the Little Lady.
“Why？”said Mary.　
“Becase I’ve nothng else to do，”said the Little Lady.
“My Head Gardener won’t let me.”
“Why don’t you go and bake pies？”said Mary.　
“My Head cook would be cross with me.”
“Father lets me hoe cabbages！”said John.
“Mother　lets me bake pies！”said Mary.
“How lucky you are！”said the Little Lady.
“Who are you？”
“John，” said John.
「私達、どういう風にそれを探すの？」、メアリ一は言いました。
「バラが根を下ろす丘までその道筋を行こう。」
「それは、どんな道筋なの？」メアリーは、言いました。
「川だよ。」ジョンは、言いました。
そこで、彼らは、頂上近くに辿り着くまで、坂を上って川沿いを行きました。そして、大きな鉄の門の側で足を止められました。それは、今までに見た中で最も長い一続きの階段に通じていました。
階段で、幼い貴婦人は、何時ものように、ゆっくりと歩く速さを上げました。彼女は、頂上の泉に着くと引き返しました。そして元のように、ゆっくりと歩く速さを落としました。階段の行き止まりで、彼女は、柵に寄り掛かったジョンとメアリ一の可愛らしい顔を見ました。
「何をしているのですか？」ジョンは、言いました。
「階段を数えているの。」幼い貴婦人は答えました。
「どうして？」メアリーは、聞きました。
「他に何もする事がなかったから。」幼い貴婦人は、言いました。
「どうして行って、キャベツを鍬で掘り起こさないの？」ジョンが、聞きました。
「家の庭師頭が許してくれないの。」
「どうして行って、パイを焼かないの？」メアリーは、言いました。
「家の料理長は、私に対して、何だか不機嫌なの。」
「お父さんは、キャべツを鍬で掘り起こさせてくれるんだよ。」ジョンが、言いました。
「お母さんは、私にパイを焼かせてくれるの。」メアリーは、言いました。
｢貴方達は、何てついているのでしょう！」幼い貴婦人は、言いました。｢貴方達は誰？」
「ジョン。」ジョンが、言いました。
