Young Kate47

A long time ago old Miss Daw lived in a narrow house on the edge of the town，and young Kate was her little servant.One day Kate was sent up to clean the attic windows，and as she cleaned them she could see all the meadows that lay outside the town.So when her work was done she said to Miss Daw.‘Mistress，may I go out to the meadows?’
‘Oh，no!’said Miss Daw.‘You must n't go in the meadows.’
‘Why not Mistress?’
‘Because you might meet the Green Woman.Shut the gate，and get your mending.’
昔、ド―老嬢が、町の外れのつましい家に住んでいました。そして若いケイトゥは、彼女の幼い使用人でした。或る日、ケイ卜ゥは、屋根裏部屋の窓を拭く為に、上に差し向けられました。そして、彼女がそれをきれいにすると、町の外に広がっている草原が、すっかり見渡せました。彼女の仕事が終わった時、彼女は、ド―嬢に言いました。「御主人様、草原に出掛けてもいいでしょうか？」
「オゥ、だめよ。」ド―嬢は、答えました。「貴方は、低湿地に入ってはいけない。」
「なぜいけないのですか、御主人様?」
「なぜって、貴女は、グリ―ン婦人に会ってもいいの？門を閉めなさい、そして貴方の繕い物を、持って来なさい。」

The next week cleaned the windows again，and as she cleaned them she saw the river that ran in the valley.So when the work was done she said to Miss Daw,‘Mistress，May I go down to the river?’‘Oh no!'said Miss Daw.‘You must never go down to the river.‘Why ever not, Mistress?’‘Because you might meet the River King.Bar the door，and polish the brasses.’The next week when Kate cleaned the attic windows，she saw the woods that grew up the hillside，and after her work was done she went to Miss Daw and said，‘Mistress，May I go up to woods?’‘Oh，no!’said Miss Daw.‘Don’t ever go up to the woods！’‘Oh Mistress Why not?’‘Because you miight meet the Dancing Boy.Draw the blinds and peel the potatoes.’
次の週も又、窓を綺麗にしました。そして、それを綺麗にしながら、彼女は、谷に注ぎ込む川を見ました。そこで仕事を終えると、彼女は、ド―嬢に言いました。「御主人様、川を下ってもいいですか？」「オゥ、だめよ！」ド―嬢は、答えました。「貴方は、川を下ってはいけないわ。」「一体、なぜいけないのですか、御主人様?」「なぜって、貴女は、川大将に会ってもいいの？ドアを閉ざしなさい。そして真鍮を磨きなさい。」翌週、ケイトゥが屋根裏部屋の窓を拭くと、山腹を覆う森を見ました。そして、彼女の仕事を終えた後、彼女は、ド―嬢の所に行き、言いました。「御主人様、森に登ってもいいでしょうか？」「オゥ、だめよ！」ド―嬢は、答えました。「決して、森に登ってはだめ。」「オゥ御主人様、何故ですか？」「なぜって、貴女は、ダンシングボ―イに会ってもいいの？鎧戸を引いて、じゃが芋の皮を剥きなさい。　」

Miss Daw sent Kate no more to the attic，and for six years Kate stayed in the house
mended the stockings,and polshed the brass,and peeled the potatoes.Then Miss Daw died，and Kate had to find another place.Her new place was in the town on the other side of the hills，and as Kate
had no money to ride，she was obliged to walk.But she did not walk by the road.As soon as she could she went into the fields,and the first thing she saw there was the Green Woman planting flowers.‘Good morning，Young Kate，’said she，‘and where are you going?’‘Over the hill to the town，’said Kate. ‘You should have taken the road，if you meant to go quick，’said the Green Woman, ‘for I let nobody pass through my meadows who does not stop to plant a flower.’‘I'll do that willinglly,'said Kate, and she took the Green Woman's trowel and planted a dazy. ‘Thank you，’ said the Green Woman;‘now pluck what you please.’ Kate plucked a handful of flowers，and the Green Woman said，For every flower you plant，you shall always pluck fifty.’
ド―嬢は、もう二度とケイトゥを屋根裏部屋には遣わしませんでした。そうして六年間、ケイトゥは、家の中に居続け、ストッキングを繕ったり、真鍮を磨いたり、ジャガイモの皮を剥いたりしていました。その後、ド―嬢は、他界しました。ですからケイトゥは他の勤め口を探さなければなりませんでした。彼女の新しい勤め口は、高原のもう一方の側の町の中でした。そしてケイトゥは、馬に乗るお金もありませんでした。彼女は、歩かざるを得ませんでした。しかし、彼女は、道を歩きませんでした。出来るだけ急いで、彼女は、草原に足を踏み入れました。彼女は、花を植えているグリ―ン夫人が、そこにいるのを見かけました。「お早う、ケイトゥ嬢さん。」と彼女は言いました。「ところで、貴女は、どこへ行くつもり？」「丘を越えて、町へ。」とケイトゥは答えました。「貴方は、道を選ぶべきだった。もし貴女が速く行くつもりなら。」とグリ―ン夫人は、言いました。因みに、私は、花を植える為に留まらない者は誰も、私の草地を通らせないのよ。」「私、喜んでそうするわ。」ケイ卜ゥは、言いました。そして彼女は、グリ―ン夫人の移植ごてを掴んでデイズィ―一本を植えました。「ありがとう。」とグリ―ン夫人は、言いました。「さあ、欲しいものを何でも摘むといいわ。」ケイ卜ゥは、手一杯の花を摘みました。どの花も貴女が植えるのだから、貴女は、何時でも5O本摘んでいいのよ。」

Then Kate went on to the valley
where the river ran，and the first thing she saw there was River King in the reeds.‘Good day，Young Kate，’said he，‘and where are you going?’‘Over the hill to the town，’said Kate.‘You should have kept to the road if you’re in anything of a hurry.’said the River King.
‘for I let nobody pass by my river who does not stop to sing a song.’
それからケイトゥは、川が流れる谷へと、歩き続けました。彼女が見た最初のものは、足の茂みの中の川大将でした。「今日は、ケイトゥ嬢さん。」と彼は言いました。」「ところで、お前は、どこへ行くつもり？」「丘を越えて、町へ。」とケイトゥは答えました。「もしお前が何か急いでいるのなら、行く道をしっかり守るべきだった。」と川大将は、言いました。
