The Days of Wine and Roses

Andy Williams -The Days of Wine and Roses(Year 1963)

The days of wine and roses laugh and run away like a child at play
Through a meadow land toward a closing door
A door marked "nevermore" that wasn't there before

The lonely night discloses just a passing breeze filled with memories
Of the golden smile that introduced me to
The days of wine and roses and you

(The lonely night discloses) Just a passing breeze filled with memories
Of the golden smile that introduced me to
The days of wine and roses and you-oo-oo.

Helen Merrill - Don't Explain

Don't Explain

Artist: Helen Merrill Lyrics
Album: Complete Helen Merrill on Mercury (1954-1958) Album Lyrics

Hush now, dont explain
Just say youll remain
Im glad your back, dont explain

Quiet, dont explain
What is there to gain
Skip that lipstick
Dont explain

You know that I love you
And what endures
All my thoughts of you

Cry to hear folks chatter
And I know you cheat
Right or wrong, dont matter
When youre with me, sweet

Hush now, dont explain
Youre my joy and pain
My lifes yours love
Dont explain

Leaving On A Jet Plane /Peter, Paul and Mary

Peter Paul and Mary - Leaving On A Jet Plane (1968)

Peter, Paul and Mary Leaving On A Jet Plane Lyrics

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn
The taxi's waiting, he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could cry.

Chorus:
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
(oh, baby, don't let me go!)
I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go, I think of you
Every song I sing, I sing for you
When I come back, I'll wear your wedding ring.

(Chorus)

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
(oh, baby, don't let me go!)
I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Then close your eyes, and I'll be on my way.
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say,

(Chorus)

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
(oh, baby, don't let me go!)
I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

In Memory Of Mary Travers - There Is A Ship

IN MEMORY OF MARY TRAVERS ~ There Is A Ship ~

PETER, PAUL and MARY - THERE IS A SHIP LYRICS

There is a ship and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep, as deep can be
But not as deep as the love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim

I leaned my back against an oak
Thinking it was a trusty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
Just as my love proved false to me

Oh, love is gentle and love is kind
The sweetest flower when first it's new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the mornin' dew

The water is wide, I cannot get o'er
Neither have I, the wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I

Mary Allin Travers

Mary Allin Travers (November 9, 1936 - September 16, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter and member of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary, along with Peter Yarrow and Noel (Paul) Stookey. Peter, Paul and Mary were one of the most successful folk-singing groups of the 1960s.
Unlike most folk musicians who were a part of the early 1960s Greenwich Village music scene, Travers grew up in that New York City neighborhood.

Death

In 2004 Travers was diagnosed with leukemia.
She received a bone marrow transplant in April 2005,which apparently slowed the progression of the disease.
Travers died on September 16, 2009, at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut, from complications arising from chemotherapy.
She was 72 years old.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face/Peter Paul And Mary

Peter, Paul and Mary - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

Peter Paul And Mary Lyrics
" The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face "

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies my love
To the dark and the empty skies.

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command my love
That was there at my command.

The first time ever I held you near
And felt your heartbeat close to mine
I thought our joy would fill the world
And would last till the end of time my love
And would last till the end of time.

Elizabeth Rebecca "Liz" Mitchell

Elizabeth Rebecca "Liz" Mitchell (born 12 July 1952, Clarendon, Jamaica is a singer, best known as the former lead singer of the 1970s disco/pop band, Boney M..

Early life

At the age of eleven, Mitchell and her family emigrated to London, England, in 1963.
By the end of the decade, she auditioned for Hair and eventually moved to Berlin to join the German cast where she replaced Donna Summer.
After Hair, Mitchell joined the Les Humphries Singers for a few years where she had a relationship with Malcolm Magaron.
The two left the group to form Malcolm Locks who released the album Caribbean Rocks in 1974 to minimal success. Mitchell, finding her career coming to a standstill, returned to her parents in England.

The Rastafari movement

The Rastafari movement encompasses themes such as the spiritual use of cannabis and the rejection of western society, called Babylon (from the metaphorical Babylon of the Christian New Testament).
It proclaims Africa (also "Zion") as the original birthplace of mankind, and from the beginning of the movement the call to repatriation to Africa for the descendants of those slaves forced into exile in the West by the Atlantic slave trade has been a central theme.
Rasta also embraces various Afrocentric and Pan-African social and political aspirations, such as the sociopolitical views and teachings of Jamaican publicist, organizer, and black nationalist Marcus Garvey (also often regarded as a prophet).
Another theme is Royalty, with Rastas seeing themselves as African royalty and using honorifics such as Prince or King in order to give royalty to their names.

Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child

This article is about the Negro spiritual.
For the blues song, see Motherless Child Blues.

"Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" (or simply "Motherless Child") is a traditional Negro spiritual.
The song dates back to the era of slavery in the United States when it was common practice to sell children of slaves away from their parents.
An early performance of the song dates back to the 1870s by the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
Like many traditional songs, it has many variations and has been recorded widely (see partial lists of choral arrangements and covers below).
The song is clearly an expression of pain and despair as it conveys the hopelessness of a child who has been torn from his or her parents.
Under one interpretation, the repetitive singing of the word "sometimes" offers a measure of hope, as it suggests that at least "sometimes" I do not feel like a motherless child.
Although the plaintive(哀調に満ちた) words can be interpreted literally(文字通り解釈する), they were much more likely metaphoric(比喩的な).
The “motherless child” could be a slave separated from and yearning (思慕の情を寄せる)for his African homeland, a slave suffering “a long ways from home”—home being heaven—or most likely both.

In 1608, Capt. John Smith explored Chesapeake Bay.
Charles I granted a royal charter for Maryland to Cecil Calvert,
Lord Baltimore, in 1632, and English settlers, many of whom were Roman Catholic, landed on St. Clement's (now Blakistone) Island in 1634.
Religious freedom, granted all Christians in the Toleration Act(信教自由令) passed by the Maryland assembly(議会) in 1649, was ended by a Puritan revolt(清教徒の反乱), 1654–1658.

From 1763 to 1767, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed Maryland's northern boundary line (境界線)with Pennsylvania.
In 1791, Maryland ceded(割譲された) land to form the District of Columbia.

Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore (August 8, 1605 – November 30, 1675), was an English peer who was the first Proprietor and Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland, and ninth Proprietary Governor of the Colony of Newfoundland.
He received the proprietorship after the death of his father, George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, for whom it was intended.
Cecil Calvert (as he was known) established and managed Maryland from his home in England; as a Catholic, he continued the legacy of his father by promoting religious tolerance in the colony, even while the Maryland colony was officially Catholic.

Maryland became known as a haven for Catholics in the New World, particularly important at a time of religious persecution(迫害)in England.
Calvert governed Maryland for forty-two years.
He also served as Governor of Newfoundland.
He died in England on November 30, 1675, aged 70 years.

Jordan River
Symbolic importance

The Jordan is a frequent symbol in folk, gospel, and spiritual music, or in poetic or literary works.
Because the Israelites made a difficult and hazardous journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom in The Promised Land, the Jordan can refer to freedom.
The actual crossing is the final step of the journey, which is then complete.
Because of the baptism of Jesus, water from the Jordan is employed for the christening of heirs and princes in several Christian royal houses, such as the cases of Simeon of Bulgaria or James Ogilvy.

Stand By Me/Ben E King

Stand By Me, Ben E King, 1961

Stand By Me Lyrics
Ben E. King

When the night has come
and the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we see
No, I won't be afraid, oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darling, darling, stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand, stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling, stand by me
Darling, darling, stand by me
Whenever you're in trouble
Won't you stand by me, oh, stand by me

the moon is the only light we see

Early Morning Rain/Peter Pauland Mary

Peter Pauland Mary - Early Morning Rain (1966)

Peter, Paul and Mary
Early Morning Rain

In the early morning rain, with a dollar in my hand
With an aching in my heart and my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home, and I miss my loved one so
In the early morning rain with no place to go

Out on runway number nine, big 707 set to go
But I'm stuck here on the ground where the cold winds blow
Well the liquor tasted good and the women were all fast
There she goes my friend, o she's rolling now at last

Here the mighty engines roar, see the silver bird on high
She's away and westward bound, high above the clouds she'll fly
Where the early rain don't fall and the sun always shines
She'll be flying o'er my home in about three hours time

This old airport's got me down, it's no earthly use to me
Cause I'm stuck here on the ground, cold and drunk as I might be
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain

Last Night When We Were Young/Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra - Last Night When We Were Young

LAST NIGHT WHEN WE WERE YOUNG LYRICS - HAROLD ARLEN

Last night when we were young
Love was a star, a song unsung
Life was so new, so real so right
Ages ago last night

Today the world is old
You flew away and time grew cold
Where is that star that seemed so bright
Ages ago last night?

To think that spring had depended
On merely this: a look, a kiss
To think that something so splendid
Could slip away in one little daybreak

So now, let's reminisce
And recollect the sighs and the kisses
The arms that clung
When we were young last night

Last Night When We Were Young

"Last Night When We Were Young" is a 1935 popular song composed by Harold Arlen, with lyrics by Yip Harburg. Arlen regarded it as the favourite of the songs that he had written.
Lawrence Tibbett recorded the song on October 9, 1935.
It was cut from his film Metropolitan but performed instrumentally behind the credits.

"Last Night When We Were Young" was highly regarded by Judy Garland, who recorded it twice, and frequently performed it.
Composer Alec Wilder called it a "most remarkable and beautiful song" that "goes far beyond the boundaries of popular music."
Continuing, he stated that "it is unlike any other Arlen song that I have heard.
However, it is unmistakably his."
Harburg did not know where he acquired the title, saying, "the juxtaposition of those two phrases is almost a whole world of philosophy".

Metropolitan is a 1935 back-stage drama film interlaced with songs and musical segments from opera.

After it brought my love so near

You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To/Helen Merrill

Helen Merrill with Clifford Brown / You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

You'd be so nice to come home to,
You'd be so nice by the fire,
While the breeze on high
Sang a lullaby,
You'd be all that I could desire!

Under stars chilled by the Winter,
Under an August moon burning above,
You'd be so nice,
You'd be paradise
To come home to and love.

You'd be so nice,
You'd be paradise
To come home to and love.

You'd be so nice to come home to,

Under stars chilled by the Winter,
Under an August moon burning abov,

Cole Porter
1943年映画「Something to Shout About」で使われた

Ray Charles and Betty Carter - Alone Together

Title:Alone Together
Artist: Ray Charles and Betty Carter

Alone together, beyond the crowd
Above the world
We're not too proud to cling together
We're strong as long as we're together

Alone together, the blinding rain
The starless nights were not in vain
For we're together
And what is there to fear together

Our love is as deep as the sea
Our love is as great as a love can be
And we can weather the great unknown
If we're alone together, together, together
If we're alone together

IT'S BEEN A LONG, LONG TIME LYRICS

Kiss me once...and kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Haven't felt like this, my dear
Since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time

You'll never know how many dreams
I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time

Oh, kiss me once...and kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long...such, a long time
I haven't felt like this my dear
Since I don't remember when
It's been a long....been a mighty long time

You'll never know how many dreams
I’ve dreamed about you
Or how empty they all seem without you
So kiss me once...and kiss me twice
And kiss me once again
It's been a long...long time

It’s been a mighty, mighty long time

Lyrics:
Time it was,
And what a time it was
It was . . .
A time of innocence
A time of confidences
Long ago . . . it must be . . .
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They’re all that’s left you

Sat on their park bench
Like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
On the high shoes
Of the old friends

Timeは、NewYorkTimesのTime

Lyrics:
Old friends
Old friends

Sat on their park bench
Like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
On the high shoes
Of the old friends

Old friends
Winter companions
The old men
Lost in their overcoats
Waiting for the sunset
The sounds of the city
Sifting through trees
Settle like dust
On the shoulders
Of the old friends

Can you imagine us
Years from today
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange
To be seventy

Old friends
Memory brushes the same years
Silently sharing the same fear

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls.

And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day.

And a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I.

Lyrics:
What a dream I had
Pressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline of smoky burgundy
Softer than the rain

I wandered empty streets
Down past the shop displays
I heard cathedral bells
Tripping down the alley ways
As I walked on

And when you ran to me
Your cheeks flushed with the night
We walked on frosted fields
Of juniper and lamplight
I held your hand

And when I awoke and felt you warm and near
I kissed your honey hair with my grateful tears
Oh, I love you, girl
Oh, I love you

Through the corridors of sleep
Past shadows, dark and deep
My mind dances and leaps in confusion
I don’t know what is real
I can’t touch what I feel
And I hide behind the shield of my illusion

So I’ll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end
And flowers never bend
With the rainfall

The mirror on my wall
Casts an image dark and small
But I’m not sure at all it’s my reflection
I am blinded by the light
Of God and truth and right
And I wander in the night without direction

So I’ll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end
And flowers never bend
With the rainfall

No matter if you’re born
To play the king or pawn
For the line is thinly drawn ‘tween joy and sorrow
So my fantasy
Becomes reality
And I must be what I must be and face tomorrow

So I’ll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end
And flowers never bend
With the rainfall

Title: Horses And High Heels
Album: Horses And High Heels
Artist: Marianne Faithfull

And under the boughs unbowed
All holding a snowy shroud
She had no heart, so hardened
All under the boughs unbowed

Each feather, it fell from skin
'Til threadbare and she grew thin
How were my eyes so blinded?
Each feather, it fell from skin

And I will hang my head
Hang my head low
And I will hang my head
Hang my head low

A gray sky with bitter skin
A rain cloud would rain on me
All out behind horizon, ohh
A gray sky of bitter skin

And I will hang my head
Hang my head low
And I will hang my head
Hang my head low

And I will hang my head
Hang my head low
And I will hang my head
Hang my head low

And I will hang my head
Hang my head low
And I will hang my head
Hang my head lo

And I will hang my head
Hang my head low
And I will hang my head
Hang my head low

And under the boughs unbowed
All holding a snowy shroud
She had no heart, so hardened
All under the boughs unbowed

I am just a poor boy
Though my story’s seldom told I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles
Such are promises
All lies and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family I was no more than a boy In the company of strangers In the quiet of a railway station
Running scared Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Lie-la-lie . . .

Asking only workman’s wages I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Lie-la-lie . . .

Now the years are rolling by me
They are rocking even me
I am older than I once was
And younger than I’ll be
But that’s not unusual
No, it isn’t strange
After changes upon changes
We are more or less the same
After changes we are More or less the same

Then I’m laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren’t bleeding me
Leading me
Going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the remainders Of every glove that laid him down
And cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame
“I am leaving, I am leaving”
But the fighter still remains
Lie-la-lie . . .

Requiem/Joan Baez

Requiem "mother mary ful of grace"

Title:Requiem Joan Baez
Artist:Joan Baez
Album:Day After Tomorrow

Ooh....

Mother mary, full or grace, awaken,
All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken,
Taken by the sea,

Mother mary calm our fears, have mercy,
Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy,
Hear our mournful plea,

Our world has been shaken,
We wander our homelands forsaken,
In the dark night of the soul bring some comfort to us all,
O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace,
That our sorrows may be faced,

Mary fill the glass to overflowing,
Illuminate the path where we are going,
Have mercy on us all,
In funeral fires burning,
Each flame to your mystery returning,

In the dark night of the soul your shattered dreamers,
Make them whole,
O mother mary find us where we've fallen out of grace,
Lead us to a higher place,

In the dark night of the soul our broken hearts you can make whole,
O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace,
Let us see your gentle face, mary.

Ooh.....

If you were a carpenter/Joan Baez

Joan Baez If you were a carpenter

If you were a carpenter, and I were a lady
Would you marry me anyway? would you have my baby?
If a tinker were your trade, would you still find me
Carrying the pots you made, following behind me?

See my love through loneliness
See my love for sorrow
I've given you my onlyness,
Come give me your tomorrow

If you worked your hands in wood, would you still love me?
Answer me, Yes I would, I'd put you above me"
And if you were a miller, had a mill-wheel grinding,
Would you see it written on my face? I'm here for the finding.

See my love through loneliness
See my love for sorrow
I've given you my onlyness,
Come give me your tomorrow

If you were a carpenter, and I were a lady
Would you marry me anyway? would you have my baby?
Would you marry me anyway? would you have my baby?

Tinker's dam and damn

The tinker's dam is a wad of wet paper or other pliable material used to dam up a hole in a metal item being repaired by the tinker using molten solder.
Thus the tinker's dam is worthless after the repair is completed.
This may have influenced the British expression of contempt "a tinker's damn" or "a tinker's cuss", applied to something considered insignificant.
In common usage, the expression is used this way: "I don't give a tinker's damn what the Vicar thinks", or sometimes shortened to, "I don't give a tinker's about the Vicar."
In this context, the speaker is expressing contempt for the local clergyman and his opinion.
A tinker's curse was considered of little significance because tinkers were reputed to swear habitually.

500 Miles/Peter, Paul & Mary

500 miles - Peter, Paul and Mary [Original Audio]

Peter, Paul & Mary 500 Miles Lyrics

If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four,
Lord I'm 500 miles from my home.
500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles
Lord I'm five hundred miles from my home.

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way
This a-away, this a-way, this a-way, this a-way,
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way.

If you miss the train I'm on you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

They say that Richard Cory
Owns one half of this whole town
With political connections to spread his wealth around
Born into society, a banker's only child
He had everything a man could want power, grace and style.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could beRichard Cory

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes
Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show
And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht!
Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could be Richard Cory

He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch
And they were grateful for his patronage and thanked him very much
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read
"Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head"

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could be Richard Cory

Simon & Garfunkel - We've Got A Groovy Thing Goin'

WE'VE GOT A GROOVY THING GOIN' LYRICS

Bad news bad news
I heard you’re packin’ to leave
I come arunnin’ right over
I just couldn’t believe it
I just couldn’t believe it

Oh baby baby
You must be out of your mind
Do you know what you’re kickin’ away
We’ve got a groovy thing going baby
We’ve got a groovy thing

I never done you no wrong
I never hit you when you’re down
I always gave you good lovin’
I never ran around
I never ran around

Oh baby baby
You must be out of your mind
Do you know what you’re kickin’ away
We’ve got a groovy thing going baby
We’ve got a groovy thing

There’s somethin’ you ought to know
If you’re fixin’ to go
I can’t make it without you
No no no no No no no no

Oh baby baby
You must be out of your mind
Do you know what you’re kickin’ away
We’ve got a groovy thing going baby
We’ve got a groovy thing

I can hear the soft breathing of the girl that I love As she lies here beside me asleep with the night Her hair in a fine mist floats on my pillow Reflecting the glow of the winter moonlight

But I’ve got to creep down the alleyway
Fly down the highway
Before they come to catch me I’ll be gone Somewhere they can’t find me

Oh oh baby you don’t know what I’ve done
I’ve committed a crime I’ve broken the law
While you were here sleeping just dreaming of me
I held up and robbed a liquor store

But I’ve got to creep down the alleyway
Fly down the highway
Before they come to catch me I’ll be gone Somewhere they can’t find me

Oh my life seems unreal my crime an illusion A scene badly written in which I must play
And though it puts me up tight to leave you
I know it’s not right to leave you, When morning is just a few hours away

But I’ve got to creep down the alleyway
Fly down the highway
Before they come to catch me I’ll be gone Somewhere they can’t find me
